Your Curated Chicago Weekend

We'll be spending much of our weekend at Tomorrow Never Knows Fest. We'll be spending much of our weekend at Tomorrow Never Knows Fest. Every Thursday morning, we help you plan the best way to spend your upcoming weekend in this glorious city. When we started 3CR, there was some debate as to whether or not we would keep an event calendar as Gapers Block did. Some of us thought we should merely serve as storytellers and tastemakers; others saw the use readers got out of the old Gapers Block calendar and contended that a culture calendar was a vital service. In the end, we devised a way for both sides to be right: a Curated Chicago Weekend. We don't just want to present you with all the events happening in the city, just the best ones, the ones you'll remember, the ones with cultural relevance. One event per night, starting with Thursday and ending with Sunday. As we continue to get our feet under us, you'll see this section grow in diversity and probably depth. For this week, though, we're going with a pretty Tomorrow Never Knows-centric lineup. It's the first music festival of 2016 and the acts each night are prime. Check out our full preview here, but for those of you who just want to get to the weekend, read on. If you don't like what you see, you can take a look at our full calendar. We think you'll like what you see, though.   Thursday, January 14 All Them Witches @ Lincoln Hall, 9:00 pm WHAT: Nashville-based psychedelic-blues foursome All Them Witches, with opening acts Old Baby and Ranch Ghost, headlines Night Two of TNK at Lincoln Hall. SO WHAT: ATW has been on my radar for a while – I’m stoked that they’re playing Tomorrow Never Knows. They’ve gained a large following in their hometown with heady jams and mesmerizing live performances, and I think they’re going to keep rising. - Zach NOW WHAT: Tickets are available here for $15.   Friday, January 15 Body and Soul Original Score Presented by Renee Baker @ Black Cinema House, 7:00 pm WHAT: Renee Baker will present Oscar Micheaux’s classic film from 1925, Body and Soul, at the Black Cinema House. A post screening discussion will be held with Baker and UChicago professor Jacqueline Stewart. SO WHAT: Renee Baker has composed over 900 compositions. In this performance, the new score, performed by the Chicago Modern Orchestra Project, will include a mood that depicts, “the life of the black American in this time period” (according to Baker). - Nicole NOW WHAT: Free and open to the public. Find out more here.   Saturday, January 16 Gill Landry @ Schubas, 9:00 pm WHAT: Saturday night and TNK‘s hittin’ the spot at Schubas with Louisiana singer/songwriter Gill Landry, Pieta Brown, Liza Anne, and Bubbles Brown. SO WHAT: Landry was a member of Old Crow Medicine Show for the past eight years before leaving upon the release of his third, self-titled solo album last March. Predictably, he’s got a tinge of the mountain sound in his catalog, but these works are fuller-bodied and draw more on the heartland than those of his former group. - Zach NOW WHAT: Tickets are on sale here for $15.   Sunday, January 17 JMSN @ Lincoln Hall, 9:00 pm WHAT: LA-based producer/songwriter JMSN closes out TNK at Lincoln Hall with openers Steven A. Clark andKinky Love. SO WHAT: He’s coming up fast in the codeine-infused R&B scene pioneered by Frank Ocean. And in the absence of Ocean’s new album (seriously, it’s way overdue), JMSN is well worth seeing for his emotional songwriting, catchy hooks, and spacey, innovative production. - Zach NOW WHAT: Tickets are available for $15 here.   Got event tips for the calendar?
