Florida-based Duo Shows Off Their True “Colours”

The opening scene of Colours’ new video for “Monster,” the single from their debut album Ivory, introduces Victory Records’ hardcore alt-rock fans to a new realm of angst, betrayal and distress. The quiet chaos begins with snapshots of steam flowing from the hood of a car, an inverted wheel infinitely spinning against a night sky and a line of blood dropping from a brown boot. A close-up of a pretty girl’s face canvases the screen, but she shows no sign of emotion or concern. She remains still, silent and unaffected. At a quick glance, her “girl-next-door” appearance – complete with a plain white t-shirt and a pair of ripped black jeans – poses no threat. Her eyes continue to cast a distant stare into the camera, and a dim light of doubt sheds its shadow. Trouble transcends, as she coyly smiles. Vocalist Kyle Tamo's voice echoes, "Just stay a little longer / So you can show me how to move," and Morgan Alley's haunting, rhythmic drums foster an anxiety, an nervousness that no one can escape. A picturesque open road paints a final, fatal sequence. Often drawing comparisons to Purity Ring and The Weeknd, Tamo's and Alley's compositions step away from Victory Records' usual suspects, which mostly comprise hard rock, metal and pop-punk bands, like Jungle Rot, Reverend Horton Heat and Continents. While Colours is a breath of fresh air for the Victory family, their thoughtful pieces like "Lawless" and "The Unforgettable" do represent the label's mission of mayhem and barrier-breaking individuality, a monologue that the creatively unruly crave for.
