It's that time of the week, when work is almost over and you want to let loose and unwind. Luckily this weekend is full of fun events to help you in this final week before the President-Elect drops the Elect and is just the President. I shudder to think.
But let's try to hold off on that with this week's curated weekend.
THE WHOLE WEEKEND, JANUARY 12th - 15th
Tomorrow Never Knows @ Various Venues
WHAT: Local and nationally acclaimed musicians in Chicago
SO WHAT: Tomorrow Never Knows is an annual festival started by Lincoln Hall and Schubas that features five days of local and nationally acclaimed musicians playing shows at independent venues throughout the city. This year’s venues include Lincoln Hall, Schubas, The Hideout, Metro, and Smart Bar. Highlights for this weekend include Ezra Furman at Lincoln Hall on Thursday, Caroline Smith with Xenia Rubinos and Over Coats on Friday at Lincoln Hall, Jeff the Brotherhood at Lincoln Hall on Saturday, and Open Mike Eagle at Schubas on Sunday. THURSDAY, JANUARY 12th
The Company You Keep Podcast: Live! @ uncommon ground Lakeview, 8:00PM
WHAT: A live recording of a fantastic podcast
SO WHAT: Singer-Songwriter Phillip-Michael Scales makes music that fits somewhere between folk and soul, displaying his great ability at making catchy and thoughtful songs. Scales transitions that talent over to his podcast The Company You Keep where he discusses music, life, and beyond with his favorite musicians. This episode's guest will be Donnie Biggins of Chicago's The Shams Band and owner/promoter/head of Tonic Room, Harmonica Dunn and the annual Dunn Dunn Fest. Biggins recently released his solo debut Profiles, so this is the perfect time to listen to this busy local musician!

WHAT: A cool book group meeting
SO WHAT: CHIRP - Chicago Independent Radio Project will be holding their next installment of their bimonthly book group at Transistor Chicago. They will be discussing Simon Reynolds' Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past. The evening will feature record-spinning and lively discussion of the book.
NOW WHAT: This event is completely free, so read up and join in on this great discussion with fellow music nerds.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 13th
"7: Galerie F Trailblazers" Opening Reception @ Galerie F, 2415 N Milwaukee Ave., 6:00PM - 10:00PM
WHAT: The first gallery opening at the new location of Galerie F
SO WHAT: Galerie F presents "7", a new gallery exhibition featuring prints and originals from Galerie F's seven trail blazing artists. The gallery has been going through a myriad of changes for the better in the past few months and now with spectacular timing of the new year they are presenting a revamped gallery in a new space. "7" brings together esteemed printmakers, beloved street artists, and creators in the space in between those two realms with a couple of makers who push the frontiers of the handcut stencil medium. "7" will spotlight the talents Andrew Ghrist, Epyon5, Jason Rowland, JC Rivera, Justin Van Genderen, Mosher, and Sentrock with fresh work in the new year.
NOW WHAT: Locations may have changed but as always this opening reception and exhibition is free and a great way to become acquainted with the work of these magnificent seven artists.
Lisa/Liza, Gia Margaret & Coins @ Uncommon Ground, 3800 N Clark St., 9:00PM - 11:00PM
WHAT: Ambient sounds that will blow your mind
SO WHAT: uncommon ground will be hosting an evening of beautiful sounds featuring a couple of local musicians. Coins will start off the night with the dark folk sound, Maine based performer Liza Victoria will let her lo-fi psych-folk project Lisa/Liza command the middle spot, and Gia Margaret will end the night with some ethereal ambiance.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 14th
Comic Book Art Show @ Blick Art Materials, 1574 N Kingsbury St., 1:00PM - 5:00PM
WHAT: The first Blick Comic Show at Lincoln Park
SO WHAT: Blick Art Materials will host a day of comic book art in their Lincoln Park location. There will be an Artist Alley style art sale for a few local professional comic artists and they will be holding an art show reception at 3:00pm.
NOW WHAT: Stop by for this free event, meet the artists, and take home a comic or print!
SUNDAY, JANUARY 15th
Time Out Chicago's Grilled Cheese Meltdown @ Thalia Hall 1807 S Allport St., 11:30AM - 6:30PM
WHAT: All the grilled cheese. All of it.
SO WHAT: Time Out Chicago is holding their second annual Grilled Cheese Meltdown! This is a chance for you to live out your cheesiest dreams by eating your way through some of Chicago's best grilled cheese sandwiches and vote to crown a champion. Participating restaurants include Cheesie's Pub & Grub, Dusek's Board and Beer, Gayle's Best Ever Grilled Cheese, Jerry's , Michael Jordan's Steak House, Same Day Café, South Water Kitchen, Toasty Cheese Mobile Eatery, and Wyler Road. Each ticket includes tastings from each participating restaurant, tomato soup from Same Day Café, and Rekorderlig's Premium Cider and Tsingtao to wash all that grilled cheese down. You'll also be able to dance to the sounds of DJ Timmy and enjoy other activities.
NOW WHAT: Prepare yourself for a day of cheesy goodness. Tickets are $27.50 per session. There are three sessions available: 11:30am-1:30pm, 2:00pm-4:00pm and 4:30-6:30pm.
