Your first Fresh Start of May is here to help you make the beginning of this month great.
In case you somehow aren't aware, the
David Lynch Retrospective at the Music Box is still going on and there are quite a few great movies playing this week, from surrealistic winding films like
Mulholland Drive and
Lost Highway to simple and poignant narratives like
The Straight Story. I highly suggest you check a few if not all of them out.
Enough about one of my favorite directors and the must see presentation at the coolest theatre in Chicago, lets get on with your fresh start to your week!
MONDAY, MAY 1st

WHAT: The amazing Juliana Hatfield
SO WHAT: Juliana Hatfield will be touring in support of her latest album Pussycat, which she produced and played every instrument on (other than drums). The album was a cathartic release, taking twelve and a half days to complete from recording through mixing the whole thing. She will be joined by local band Pool holograph, whose sound will add a post rock madness to the night

SO WHAT: Divino Niño makes their headlining debut at Empty Bottle, bringing their dreamy and psychedelic sound to get everyone's week started off right! Joining will be a whole bunch of great local act including

WHAT: A new improv tour featuring the current cast members of the Emmy-nominated TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?
SO WHAT: Whose Live Anyway? is 90 minutes of hilarious improvised comedy and songs all based on audience suggestions. Cast members Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis, and Joel Murray will be leading the show with their decades of combined improv skills. Audience participation is key to the show so bring your suggestions and you might even be asked to join the cast onstage!

Tuesday Funk #105 @ Hopleaf, 5148 N Clark St, 7:00PM
WHAT: An eclectic monthly reading series that celebrates good writing and good beer.
SO WHAT: Andrew Huff and Eden Robins co-host Tuesday Funk, an eclectic monthly reading series where a group of writers read their works while the audience takes in a drink or two. Housed in the upstairs bar at Hopleaf, Tuesday Funk constantly delivers wonderful writers sharing their best work. Readers will include Mikki Kendall, Mary Anne Mohanraj, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Mare Swallow, and Alicia Swiz!

WHAT: Great comics and the women who make them
SO WHAT: Join The whistler as they host a celebration for the release of Kristen Radtke's stunning graphic memoir Imagine Only Wanting This. Chicago comics artist Megan Kirby will moderate a panel of women comics discussing their interpretation of the body — how they draw their own and others' in their work. Radtke will be joined by Leila Abdelrazaq, Sophie Lucido Johnson, and Corinne Mucha.
