The highly anticipated Chicago Critics Film Festival may start tomorrow, but that's not the only news making waves. On Tuesday, it was announced that Mimi Plauche has been promoted from Programming Director to Artistic Director of the Chicago International Film Festival effective immediately. Plauche’s placement at the top of CIFF and its parent company, Cinema/Chicago, makes her one of the very few women in this country that are artistic directors of film festivals.
We spoke at length with Plauche right before the most recent iteration of CIFF a few months ago and we were struck by her commitment to empower films and filmmakers that are off the beaten path.
Michael Kutza, the previous Artistic Director, will remain on as Cinema/Chicago CEO and President. Kutza founded the organization back in the early 60s. Cinema/Chicago’s most recent major event was the CineYouth festival which showcased filmmakers under the age of 22 in an attempt to map out a potential future of film.
The Chicago International Film Festival returns October 12 - 26.
