Fresh Start to Your Week: 6/12 – 6/14

The sun's out and it's sweltering, so why not take advantage of the Chicago weather with some outdoors fun! Millennium Park's music and film series start up this week as well as Music Box Theatre's screenings at The Park at Wrigley. It's a great way to experience the summer weather and enjoy some greaat songs and films. If the heat is too much to bear, there are plenty of literary, theatrical, and musical indoor events to you to enjoy as well. So let's get your week off to a fresh start! MONDAY, JUNE 12th PS: You Sound Like Someone I Can Trust - Community Release @ Ovation, 2324 W Fulton St., 6:00PM - 8:00PM WHAT: Join 826CHI and the students of this year's Young Authors Book Project for a community celebration of their new book,  P.S. You Sound Like Someone I Can Trust. SO WHAT: P.S. You Sound Like Someone I Can Trust is a compilation of letters between 8th graders at Emiliano Zapata Academy and 10th graders at Amundsen high school, where 62 teens reflect on their identities, share their hopes and anxieties about the future, open up about loved ones’ deaths, and swap K-Pop and Netflix recommendations. You will have the opportunity to meet the esteemed authors, share snacks and drinks, enjoy music from After School Matters' youth DJ's, and celebrate the connections these writers have forged across our large and segregated city NOW WHAT:This event is free and open to the public, so come out and celebrate this wonderful collection of letters! Millennium Park Summer Music Series: Otis Taylor / Ben Sollee & Kentucky Native @ Millennium Park, 201 E Randolph St., 6:30PM WHAT: Another year of the fantastic Millennium Park Summer Music Series SO WHAT: This is the second year of the re-imagining of Downtown Sound and Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz series. Merging them together has created a very eclectic set of musical experiences. This year's exciting lineup continues to take cues from both internationally known performers to local artists that are more than worthy of such an impressive spotlight. This evening the blues of Otis Taylor and an intricate blend of genres from Ben Sollee & Kentucky Native will fill Millennium Park. NOW WHAT: All shows in this series are free and will start at 6:30 p.m. rain or shine. SheFest 2017 @ Pride Arts Center, 4139 North Broadway, 7:30PM WHAT: SheFest (formerly LezFest) is Pride Arts Center’s semi-annual showcase of Chicago’s queer female and non-binary artists, as well as the diverse stories and experiences of queer femininity. SO WHAT: This year’s SheFest, will be hosted by stand-up comedian Shannon Noll, and will feature spoken word poetry, Moth-style stories, comedy, clowning, a fire act and dance. Performers will include Molly Brennan, Tamale Sepp, Ada Cheng, Khloe Janel, Anna Wolfe, Alex Seligsohn, Jade, June Thiele, Shannon Leigh Webber, Niki Gee, Michelle Zacarias, and Terri Hudson, and Jessica Martin. SheFest is produced by Iris Sowlat and Julia Rufo, and stage-managed by Daiva Paulis. NOW WHAT: GA tickets cost $10 and can be purchased either online or at the door. VIP tickets are $15. Proceeds from SheFest will be used for Pride Films & Plays' LezPlay writing contest and workshop program and to help queer female playwrights, directors and actors produce work during the 201-18 season. TUESDAY, JUNE 13th The Moth StorySLAM: Celebration @ The Promontory ,5311 S Lake Park Ave., 7:00PM WHAT: Storytellers telling stories SO WHAT: The Moth presets an open-mic storytelling competition. It is open to anyone with a five-minute story to share on the night’s theme. Come tell a story, or just enjoy the show! This time performers prepare a five-minute story about celebration. Opulent parties like birthdays, weddings, Bris, Bar Mitzvahs, Quinceaneras, graduations, an what ever else you felt needed to be celebrated! NOW WHAT: Tickets are $10 for this evening of story telling! This venue is 17+ unless accompanied by an adult. Rush Hour Concerts @ St. James Cathedral, 65 E Huron St, 5:45PM WHAT: Rush Hour Concerts returns for its 18th season of weekly, musical getaways SO WHAT:  Hosted by the International Music Foundation, Rush Hour Concerts are free musical events for those in the city to sit own and relax for 30 minutes of wonderful classical music in the beautiful confines of St. James Cathedral. WEDNESDAY JUNE 14th Music Box Theatre Movies @ The Park at Wrigley, 3637 N Clark St. 6:00PM WHAT: Movies at a new summer location! SO WHAT:  The Park at Wrigley is hosting a free summer movie series presented by Chicago’s premier venue for independent and classic films, Music Box Theatre. Each screening will take place at sunset but arrive early as there will also be an exciting preshow that may include music and talent shows! This week's screening is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Dir. John Hughes, 103mins, 1986)! NOW WHAT: Screenings will take place at sunset and are free, so bring your blankets and lean back to enjoy the movie. Ace of Cups I @ Elastic Arts, 429 W Diversey #208, 8:30PM WHAT: A series that evokes abundance, fulfillment, and inner power SO WHAT: The Ace of Cups rejoices in intuition and quenches our thirst with creative energy. The first of a two-part series curated by ambient artist Lykanthea (Lakshmi Ramgopal) will feature sounds and words from Mykele Deville, Akenya, Half Gringa, and writer Jade T. Perry. Between sets Alia Ra’naa Walston will be providing nourishment in the form of tarot consultations at the bar. NOW WHAT: Tickets are $10 for the first show of this intriguing series!
