It's one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it sort of places, save for two claims to fame. One is the incredible Volo Bog State Natural Area, a quaking bog that is the only remaining such natural area in the state. Another is a museum that really throws you back in time, Volo Auto Museum. Though its newest tagline points out "we're more than cars," if that was all it had in its collection, it would still be more than worth a visit some weekend. Volo Auto Museum, which is actually a 35-acre attraction that also houses planes, collectibles and multiple buildings worth of antiques along with other exhibits, is rich with famous cars. It's also soon to be the subject of a History Channel show called "Volo, House of Cars." If you'd like to see Christine, the murderous car from the eponymous movie, she's there (or one of the ones used in filming.). If you'd rather see Marilyn Monroe's ride, you'll find it. Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds? Check. The list goes on, to include KITT from Knight Rider, several Bond cars and the Ghostbusters' ride on through Batmobiles. Volo has 2005's 'Tumbler' as well as the original George Barris Batmobile, created for the beloved Batman TV series featuring Adam West. Because of the museum's relationship with Barris, they also came to be acquainted with West, who appeared at the museum several times and even signed the Batmobile. Now, they're hosting a benefit in his honor. Scheduled for this coming Saturday, July 15. Celebrating Adam West: A St. Jude Benefit, will take place at 10 am at the Volo hot spot, and visitors to the event can expect to receive a special photograph of West with the Volo Batmobile as well as being given an opportunity to sit in the famous car for a special photo from 11am to 4pm. In addition, local sketch group, The World of Weird Monster Show, will be in costume ready to take photos with visitors. A portion of all the day's paid admission proceeds will go directly to the Adam West Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Additionally, if you can't make it out, the museum (and Third Coast!) suggest you make a donation to the fund in place of attending. Click this link to do so. West was a Hollywood treasure with a humble spirit and generous heart, and though it's a bit of a drive from downtown, we couldn't think of a better way to honor his memory than with a little Bat funtime in the name of helping sick kids.
