The time has come! It's Halloween weekend! There are plenty of events going on where everyone will be going and dressing up in their spookiest, most referential, or inappropriate costume for a night on the town.
So let's get on with your curated weekend!
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26th
The Lemon Twigs and The Symposium @ Thalia Hall, 1807 S Allport St. 7:00PM 17+
WHAT: Two exceptional rock bands in one of the city's best venues
SO WHAT: There are few bands that are as amazing as The Lemon Twigs. The sibling duo are both under 21, but their talent for creating some of the glammiest rock songs you'll hear is unparalleled. I guarantee your jaw will drop at the infectious enthusiasm and flawless instrumentation. Check out Colin Smith's review of the band the last time they were in town! Joining them will be local psych outfit The Symposium!
NOW WHAT: Tickets are $16 for this great evening of rock.
Drinkers with Writing Problems: Lit Up! @ Brisku's Bistro & Bar, 4100 N Kedzie Ave., 7:00PM, 21+
WHAT: Drinks and readings!
SO WHAT: It’s the season finale of Drinkers with Writing Problems! The series produces a show that highlights some of Chicago’s most creative writers and performers, along with some of DWWPers' favorites. This reading series features all genres of writing from first person narrative to young adult fiction to poetry to whatever the writer decides to share with the audience. Check out their event page for a full list of readers and the evening special musical act!
NOW WHAT: Doors open at 7:00pm and show starts at 7:30pm, so get there early and enjoy these readings!
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27th
The Lords of Chaos: Handmade Mayhem from Epyon5 and R6D4 @ Galerie F, 2415 N Milwaukee Ave., 6:00PM- 10:00PM
WHAT: A little bit of chaos for your Halloween weekend
SO WHAT: The Lords of Chaos is an exhibition featuring the spray-painted works of R6D4 and EPYON5. The pair will focus on presenting characters that embody the very idea and definition of chaos; whether it's characters who walk the line between good and evil or who have created an atmosphere of disorder through intentional and unintentional means. R6D4 and Epyon5 concentrate their work on stunning stencil techniques and applications. Epyon5 mixes an evolved Renaissance realism with familiar modern-day characters while R6D4 re-imagines characters with his unique twist.
NOW WHAT: This opening reception is free! Costumes are welcome, maybe even encouraged, but not required at this celebration of chaos.
An Intimate Spooky Evening @ DZ Records, 8548 S 85th Ct, Hickory Hills, 8:00PM - 11:45PM
WHAT: Another DZ Records style party!
SO WHAT: Join DZ Records for a night of great music as they begin their qust to raise funds for next year's DZ Fest. There will be a nice lineup of bands rocking out for your aural pleasure including Harvey Fox, Candy Ambulance, Bad Bad Meow, and Peekaboos! There will be free water and the event is BYOB.
NOW WHAT: Admission is $10. All proceeds go towards funding DZ Fest 2018.
Tiny Fireflies/Scout Ripley/BESTMAN @ The Burlington, 3425 W Fullerton Ave., 9:00PM, 21+
WHAT: Bands getting into the Halloween Spirit!
SO WHAT: Start your Halloween weekend with some infectious pop tunes and special cover sets from Tiny Fireflies performing as Blonde Redhead, BESTMAN donning his best Tom Petty sounds, and Scout Ripley being Scout Ripley!
NOW WHAT: Costumes encouraged for this musical evening!
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28th
Halloween Comic Fest @ Various Locations, 11:00AM, All Ages
WHAT: Halloween Comic Fest is a fun celebration with Free Comics!
SO WHAT: Much like Free Comic Book Day, Halloween Comic Fest aims to bring people together to celebrate comic books and have a bunch of fun while doing so! There will be tons of giveaways including some Stranger Things merch! Plenty of shops are participating in the yearly event including Challengers Comics + Conversation, Chimera’s Comics, G-Mart Comic, Maximum Distractions, Top Cut Comics, Zone Comics & Games, and many more! NOW WHAT: It’s free! Go out and discover the wonderful world of comic books!
HopeHELL BOOing @ Hopewell Brewing Company, 2760 N Milwaukee Ave., 1:00PM - Midnight, All ages (21+ to drink, of course)
WHAT: Beer, costumes, food trucks, puns and more for your Halloween weekend!
SO WHAT: Join Hopewell Brewing Company for a day of spooky treats as they celebrate Halloween with a party in their taproom! They’ll have airbrushed t-shirts, real honest to goodness magic, food trucks and special beer tappings for you to enjoy! Costumes are highly encouraged as they will be giving prizes to the best dressed folks!
NOW WHAT: Entry is free, so stop by, have a few drinks, and enjoy the spooky theme!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29th
Day of the Dead Celebration @ Maxwell Street Market, 800 S Desplaines St., 10:00AM - 3:00PM
WHAT: The Maxwell Street Market adds a little Dia de los Muertos to their weekly market
SO WHAT: This is one of the most fun days of the year at the historic Maxwell Street Market! The day will include Halloween-themed and traditional Latin programming for the entire family! You can see performances from the Huehuecoyotl Aztec Dancers, a rendition of “Thriller” with Rico Michael Jackson, live music, a costume contest for kids 10 and under, arts and crafts workshops, pumpkin decorating, a henna artist and much more!
NOW WHAT: It's free and fun for the whole family!
Beer Yoga @ Revolution Brewing Tap Room, 3340 N Kedzie Ave., 10:30PM
WHAT: Beer Yoga for everyone (21+ obviously)!
SO WHAT: Bend, stretch and sip during this power yoga class taught by Katie Palmer and Steph Littlefield. You'll be on the taproom floor around the barrels and giant Revolution Brewing flag enjoying a fun vinyasa flow and eventually a post-shavasana brew (included in ticket price). Laugh and sweat in an amazing community of fun people who love their craft beer!
