Proviso East High School One of First in Illinois to Test Controversial Learning Formula
In an effort to improve student test scores, Proviso East High School is experimenting with a new way of teaching: competency-based learning. This type of education is derived from the University of Chicago approach introduced in the 1960s. Proviso is one of 10 schools in Illinois to test out this formula of education, which puts students in charge of their learning. Students do most research independently or with classmates, and only request a teacher's help as a last resort. The introduction has been rough for parents who have yet to come around to the method (Chicago Tribune).
