John Mahoney, “Frasier” Actor and Steppenwolf Ensemble Member, Dead at 77

John Mahoney, known for his role as a curmudgeonly police officer and father of two neurotic sons on "Frasier," died Sunday at 77, suffering from throat cancer. After his big-time television job, Mahoney stepped off the Hollywood scene to pursue theater in a city that he loved, Chicago. He acted with the Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble for over 30 years following his time on the sitcom. He was raised in Blackpool, England, but initially discovered Chicago on a visit to his sister when he was 11 years old, and said he never forgot the beauty he then encountered (Chicago Tribune).
