Former Police Chief McCarthy Calls Chicago “A Mess” During Fundraiser

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy held a fundraiser Sunday at the Irish American Heritage Center. While he hasn't formally announced his mayoral run, banners read, "McCarthy for Mayor." Speaking to an audience of 300 people, who had paid $100 or more a head, McCarthy said that since his firing, "our city has been a mess," listing problems of crime, economic stagnation, and its politics and education under Mayor Rahm Emanuel. McCarthy's dismissal followed the release of footage showing the murder of Laquan McDonald. He reminded his audience of the improved violence statistics of 2016 before his firing (but he implies Mayor Emanuel neglected to mention that improvement in reports of 2017 violence (Chicago Tribune).
