Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar to Launch Progressive News Outlet

Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar (47th) is launching a non-profit news outlet he says will be a “progressive response” to the conservative Illinois Policy Institute. Pawar plans to launch One Illinois on Wednesday, with the first set of stories to focus on “the resilience of communities” in Illinois’ river towns. “Our goal here is — I don’t think it’s liberal or hyper liberal or far left to simply talk about investment or equity or fairness because if that is considered liberal or progressive, we are heading to a very scary place,” said Pawar. While Pawar said one of his goals is to bring communities together “for policies that support working families,” a secondary goal is to be a progressive answer to IPI, which for years has advocated for “pro-business” policies and other proposals that mirror Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s ‘Turnaround Agenda.’ Rauner once donated $500,000 to the Institute, and several of its employees briefly worked for his administration.
