Fresh Start to Your Week: 6/18 – 6/20
This edition of the Fresh Start is filled with some fun concerts. Summer officially starts later this week and what better way to celebrate than some excellent music from local bands and beyond! So whether you're looking for jazz, hip hop, rock, or pop, there's a show for you this week!
So let's give your week a fresh start!
MONDAY & TUESDAY, JUNE 18th & 19th
Wand: 2 Nights @ The Hideout, 1354 W Wabansia Ave., 9:00pm, 21+
WHAT: A fantastic band’s two night stint at an excellent venue
SO WHAT: Wand will be celebrating the release of their new album Plum an the expansion of their band (Evan Burrows, Cory Hanson, Lee Lande, and two new members: Robbie Cody & Sofia Arregui) with two nights of unhinged pysh rock. Joining them on Monday will be Dead Rider and Itasca, while Tuesday will see Dead Rider and Bill Mackay & Riley Walker join the musical fray!
NOW WHAT: Tickets are only $15 for each night. Monday tickets and Tuesday tickets are still available so get out there!
MONDAY, JUNE 18th
Millennium Park Summer Music Series: José James & Kahil El'Zabar @ Millennium Park, 201 E Randolph St,6:30pm - 9:00pm, All Ages
WHAT: Another year of the fantastic Millennium Park Summer Music Series
SO WHAT: This year's exciting lineup continues to take cues from both internationally known performers to local artists that are more than worthy of such an impressive spotlight. Tonight the series will feature Lean On Me: José James Celebrates Bill Withers and Kahil El'Zabar Arts Heritage Ensemble with special guest David Murray (improvised Jazz)! In honor of the Juneteenth celebration, the event will begin with a new poem from interdisciplinary artist avery r. young.
NOW WHAT: All shows in this series are free and will start at 6:30 p.m. rain or shine.
Celebration: 826CHI Teen Writers Studio Book Release @ Poetry Foundation, 61 W Superior St, 7:00pm, All Ages
WHAT: Join 826CHI students, staff, volunteers, friends, and family for the release of the annual Teen Writers Studio chapbook at the Poetry Foundation.
SO WHAT: Throughout the school year, members of the Teen Writers Studio meet at 826CHI to practice writing and explore their personal styles. This chapbook release is the culmination of all of that hard work and growth, and cause for celebration. A reception will follow the program.
NOW WHAT: It’s free! 826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6–18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
Free Monday: Peach Kelli Pop / Poison Boys / Peach Fuzz
WHAT: Some peachy music to start off your working week
SO WHAT: It’s a Monday at the bottle, so get ready for some excellent free tunes! Coming to Chicago from Los Angeles, CA by way of Ottawa, Canada will be the ridiculously addicting and fast paced rock songs of Peach Kelli Pop. Joining her and her band will be the boisterous glam of Poison Boys and the straight up rock and roll of of local Peach Fuzz!

TUESDAY, JUNE 19th
Big Syn / The Curls / Sama Dams / Divorce @ The Burlington, 3425 W Fullerton Ave., 8:00pm, 21+
WHAT: You ever just want to hang out and listen to four great bands in a row on a hot summer night in Chicago?
SO WHAT: If you answered yes, then this show is for you! Join the likes of The Curls‘ and their funky jazz rock combo, Big Syn‘s experimental sci-fi art pop, Divorce‘s menagerie of indie rock, and Sama Davas’ interesting avant pop sound.

Relax Attack Jazz Series: Hong Kong @ the Whistler, 2421 N Milwaukee Ave, 11:30pm, 21+
WHAT: Spend this Tuesday at the Whistler listening to some interesting jazz compositions
SO WHAT: Hong Kong will be taking the stage to help you enjoy the start of summer with some chill vibes and tunes. They’ll be playing 2 sets starting at 9:30pm, so don’t miss it!
NOW WHAT: No cover, just stop by and enjoy the vibes.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20th
Slow Caves / Laverne / Uma Bloo @ GMan Tavern, 3740 N Clark St, 7:00pm, 21+
WHAT: Some excellent music at GMan
SO WHAT: Slow Cave produced some fun hooks and entertaining melodies in their chill mix of garage rock and synthpop. Joining them will be Uma Bloo and her dreamy indie rock that highlights her unique voice and the jangly ear-worm worthy rock of Laverne!

Mykele Deville / Jordanna / Oliv Blu @ Tonic Room, 2447 N Halsted St, 8:00pm, 21+
WHAT: Three local bands in one chill spot
SO WHAT: Take a midweek breather with these refreshing local artists! Chill out with the soulful hip hop of Mykele Deville, the always phenomenal voice of Jordanna, and the chill and ethereal voice of Oliv Blu!

SNST /Ovef Ow / Sleepwalk / Wet Tropics @ Subterranean, 2011 W North Ave, 8:30pm, 21+
WHAT: A night to get noisy with some local bands
SO WHAT: SNST released their collection of new wave-y indie rock songs Turn Out the Lights late last year. This is a great time to the duo perform especially with a lineup including the distroted sounds of Wet Tropics, the dreamy shoegaze of Sleepwalk, and the post punk surf rock of Ovef Ow!
