The first taste of summer in Chicago means two things: spending time outdoors and enjoying a cocktail. When temperatures reached 80 degrees this week, it was time to find both. Overlooking Mariano Park, the new terrace at Carmine's Chicago offers a setting that blends European-inspired outdoor dining with the energy of a Chicago summer.
Stretching nearly the length of the block, the terrace was filled with co-workers, families, business associates, and friends gathering after work. As the sun began to set, the patio's full-length awning provided welcome shade. We exchanged Midwestern pleasantries with our server and landed on the classic, “it’s really not that hot out with the breeze,” and fortunately for us, this breeze had a warm hint of fresh bread and garlic delight.
Known for its generous portions, Carmine's also offers an al-fresco dining experience well-suited for lighter summer fare. With a toast to summer, the meal began with a glass of Sancerre from Sager & Verdier, served in a generous pour with a crisp finish.
The perfect respite to people-watch, and take in the beautiful city that has finally emerged from its wintery cocoon.

The Grilled Calamari and Caesar salad made ideal shared starters. Dressed with fresh herbs, lemon, and olive oil, the calamari was notably tender with a smoky char. The dish included four large pieces of calamari, their respective tentacles, and colorful bell peppers, bringing brightness and crunch to the plate. Not shockingly, the complimentary bread was particularly useful for soaking up the remaining herb dressing.

For the entrée, the Arrabiata Cavatelli "8 Finger," one of Carmine's signature dishes, offered a generous portion of cavatelli pasta. Rosebud's arrabiata sauce and finely shredded prosciutto coated the house-made pasta. While prosciutto often takes center stage, it served as a supporting element here, adding savory depth to balance the acidity of the tomato-based sauce. The sauce's thicker consistency adhered well to the pasta and enhanced each bite.

Even without a trip to the Amalfi Coast, Carmine's terrace provides a summer dining experience that delivers la dolce vita. Carmine's Chicago is located at 1037 N. Rush St. Reservations are recommended. For more information, visit Carmine's Chicago.
