Review: Charlotte’s Web by Young People’s Theatre Is the Perfect Show for Children and Families!

Young People’s Theatre of Chicago presents an endearing and entertaining rendition of the classic children’s novel, Charlotte’s Web by E.B Webb-- play adaptation by Joseph Robinette. This tale follows the unexpected friendship between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider, played by Renzo Vicente and Mary-Margaret McCormack respectively.

This charming show, directed by Randy White, is great for children and families. Before the show starts, the theater is packed with excited energy from little ones all about as they sing along to their favorite songs on the pre-show playlist, courtesy of sound designer Kurt Ottinger. His incredible work continues throughout the opening sequence, creating a clear atmosphere of a beautiful morning on the farm using various animal sounds and a warm melodic undertone. Of course this is achieved with the help of the lighting designer, Bridget Williams, who uses the lights to clearly depict various times of the day throughout the show.

Lights come up and the set, designed by Jacquelin Penrod, is a spitting image of a farm, using natural materials like wood and hay. The set was very adaptable with numerous moving pieces that helped distinguish one location from another.

The actors do a wonderful job bringing all of the animals and characters alive. Several of the actors, Dakota Hughes, Matt Frye, Kaylah Marie Crosby, and Cameron Nalley, play multiple characters and make each one unique through character voice, physicality, and energy. It was a joy to watch them go from a stressed uncle to a brutting sheep in a matter of minutes.

Fern, played by the young actor Elin Joy Seiler, is the heart of the show. The very first time we see Fern, she is begging to save Wilbur’s life. From then on, Fern shows all living things unconditional love and respect. Her love for animals is reflected in the love the other animals learn to have for each other. They learn to make sacrifices for the betterment of one another, which is certainly learned from the big-hearted little Fern.

This heart-warming 60 minute show is packed with fun and silliness, but still leaves you with a strong message about friendship, perseverance, and love.
